The Help Book Report Essay The Help, by Kathryn Stockett (2009) is a novel set in Jackson, Mississippi during the civil rights movements of the 1960s. It follows the lives of three women –one white, a recent college graduate, and two black maids. The book was a huge success and was turned into a major motion picture. However sadly like many overnight sensation novels The Help has an interesting storyline but is poorly executed. One problem I had with the writing of this novel was the contrasts she drew about the dialogues of the characters. In the book the author tells that one of the characters, Celia Foote, speaks incorrect English because of the poverty she was raised in (another character, Minnie, comments on her accent and way of speaking) however, when Celia speaks in the book her dialogue is impeccable. This is shown in the quote (for the purpose of differentiation, Celia’s speech is shown in italics and Minnie’s in bold) â€Å"They dont like me because of what they think I did†¦ They dont like you ‘cause they think you white trash. Celia has been said to speak in the same way as the black maids, but when she and Minnie are conversing they speak entirely differently. Note the way that because is pronounced- Minnie has obliterated the ‘be’. The contradiction the author has used suggests her incompetency as a writer. Another is the way this book was billed. The Help is said to be a true to events, accurate recount of life in the South in the 60’s, but the reader does no t have to look too deeply into the book to tell that this is untrue. Perhaps if the writer had spent a little more time researching the era she was going to write in her novel would be worthy of this acclaim. it is clear to almost anybody who reads the novel that she is totally unworthy of this praise and it is disgraceful that she does not seem to care that she is misinforming the readers of her book if they take her word for how life was in the South. This book became wildly successful only because it was thrown in the faces of those who would read it without really thinking into it, enjoying the idea of a white saviour to make America’s dark black civil rights history seem like it wasn’t really so bad. The very idea that the book is based on- that black maids would become so trusting of a white woman who also happens to be friends with their employer, to allow their stories about how difficult it is to work for the white upper class, is so far fetched that it borders on insanity. Stockett then proceeds to illustrate her story to seem s though it would be perfectly plausible. Whilst this would be perfectly fine if Stockett had ensured that the book was received as an entirely fictious work, Stockett also manages to belittle or remove the two most powerful influences of the time; racism and male dominance. I believe this to be because the two did not fit in properly with the storyline and how she wanted it to go- inst ead of rising to the challenge and changing her plot a little to incorporate the two, she once again proves her lack of any real eloquence in writing. I would go so far as to say that her imagination was the only reason she made it in the writing industry as it was definitely not her writing prowess. She wanted her antagonist (or heroine I feel she would prefer), a white upper class woman, to be completely blame free, and so blamed any racism, although to her credit there was very little, on the way she was raised, and blamed her mother for it all. (she does the same for Elisabeth’s daughter, saying that she will also grow up to be racist). Then she draws a complete parallel with Hattie, who is an extreme racist and whose mother is one of the least racist characters in the book. Hattie did not learn her racism from her mother, therefore Stockett cannot make the claim that the parents of a child are to blame. Nevertheless, my experience from reading The Help was not a purely negative one. There were many moments in the story that if I just ignored the constant contradictions in the text I found very moving or entertaining. The dedication Skeeter showed to finding her old maid Constantine, who raised her, and the evident love she had for her, was incredibly touching. Tying her into the story and revealing that it was because of her that Skeeter is not racist was possibly one of the only smart literary moves the author made –that is if you look past the fact that everyone else in her social circle and their parents were raised in the exact same way and not a single one of them turned out like Skeeter. The way that Abileen cared for Mae Moebly was also very touching, and the words â€Å"you is kind, you is smart, you is important† have become synonymous with The Help. These two aspects can be linked together in more than just how touching they both were. (although from what I can gather of Stockett’s writing ‘prowess’ or lack thereof, I cannot decipher whether or not this was purposeful) The way that Abileen cares for Mae Moebly and how Mae sees her more as her mother than her own mother Elizabeth, is a representative for how Skeeter was raised by Constantine instead of her own mother, and xplains why Skeeter was so desperate to find Constantine. Overall, I was incredibly disappointed with this novel as the author butchered an amazing concept that, had it been in an accomplished writers hands could have been an incredible story. The author has a very talented imagination, but perhaps it would be better for her to in future just create the concept and allo w someone who actually has some degree of eloquence to write the actual novel, or alternatively to hire an editor who actually knows how to proofread for contradictions.

Influences and Sources of Theodore Roethke's Elegy for Jane In "In Memoriam A. H. H.," a new kind of elegy with roots in the elegiac tradition, Tennyson writes, "For words, like Nature, half reveal/And half conceal the Soul within" (1045). The truth of Tennyson's statement appears in Theodore Roethke's "Elegy for Jane: My Student Killed by a Horse." Roethke conceals much about himself as a person yet reveals much about himself as a poet when he puts his grief into words. Without knowing something of Roethke's personal and professional life, one would think that a student named Jane was the sole inspiration for this moving elegy; however, in The Glass House, the poet's biographer, Allan Seager, reveals more than one possible source of inspiration for the poem. At the University of Washington, as at Roethke's other teaching posts, students liked him, and he frequently formed close relationships with his students--in fact, he married one of his former students; however, this was not the case with Jane Bannick. Seager reveals that "Ted had not known her [Jane] very well." She " was a student of Ted's for only one quarter. She was thrown from a horse and killed" (193). Yet another one of his students may also have had an influence on this elegy. According to Seager, Roethke "may have been influenced also by Lois Lamb, who had fallen from a horse the previous summer and described the attendant fears to him in detail" (193). Seager also mentions that [the poet] and Lamb conducted a series of `experiments' with a flock of turkeys on the sanitarium [Pinel] grounds" (187) during the poet's 1949-50 hospitalization of manic-depressive illness. A Risk That Paid Off Essay

One of the biggest risks that paid off was my husband and I agreeing for him to join the Marine Corps. It required us to up and move our family from Utah to California with no friends or family around for support in times of hardship, which tends to come a lot with being a military family. I had to learn to take control of everything from paying the bills to taking care of the house and vehicles because of his training, field ops, and deployments which required him to be gone for weeks or months at a time. When he deploys I have to raise the kids on my own which is a challenge in itself. It creates chaos for the kids emotionally and they begin to act out at home and at school. They lose respect for both of us when he is gone. Having family time and alone time with each other becomes very limited because of his work schedule. We never know when our family time will be or even if there will be family time. With that being said you can only imagine how hard it is to get alone time together. I believe this all has and continues to pay off because I have created a whole new family within the Corps, I have made new friends that can never be replaced and only they can truly understand the struggles I go through better than any of my friends and family from home ever could. I have learned to be more self-reliant maintaining our household on my own. As far as our marriage it continues to get stronger with communication and we cherish each and every moment more than we ever have before as a family and as a couple.

The stark distorted set, as a projection of his insane views, askew angles of vision and hypnotic acting enhances the portrayal of madness in this film. The Emperor Jones, a play by Eugene O'Neill, tells the saga of an African American man who sets himself up as emperor in a Caribbean Island. The film has been cited as an influence on several artistic expressions, including films, music and, among others, theatrical plays. Blackwater from toilet waste can also go into the tank given proper treatment first. The wastewater is then pumped into the garden where the plants will essentially eat, drink and breathe away the contaminants found in the wastewater. Certain kinds of plants "purify" the contaminants into useful energy while clean water evaporates. All that is leftover from the wastewater is plant biomass, evaporated water, carbon dioxide and heat. When the plants are harvested they can be composted, used or even sold for profit. Plants such as bamboo and holly work very well i n a wastewater garden. The evaporated water and heat can be recaptured to offer a clean source of pure distilled water and for heating air or water. One option for creating a wastewater garden is to use a greenhouse, which will cause higher temperatures and can help heat your house (Waste 1-3). AP classes are designed to be the equivalent of introductory-level college courses. However, you may also have the opportunity to take a real college class at your local community college as a high school student.Which option should you choose? Both community college classes and APs can be valuable additions to your transcript, but you might decide that one or the other is a better fit depending on your needs. I’ll go through the advantages of each and give you the information you need todecidebetween them. What Are AP Classes? The AP (Advanced Placement) program was designed by the College Board to give high school students an introduction tocollege-level material. AP classes are widely considered to be the most advanced types of classes you can take in high school. To earn AP credit, you have to take an exam at the end of the class that tests your knowledge of the curriculum.The exam is scored on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest score.You may be able to get college creditif you score a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP exam, although policies differ between schools.AP classes are offered in 34 different subjects (although some high schools that participate in the program only offer a few of them), and over 2.3 million students take the exams each year. What Are Community College Classes? For the purposes of this article, community college classes are classes at nearby community collegesthat are open to high school students.Many high schools have programs that allow students to enroll in community college classes and continue their high school educations at the same time.You have to actually go to the community college to take these classes, and they may be held either during the regular school day or at night. In the following sections, I'll go over the advantages of AP and community college classes for high school students. Advantages of AP Classes Over Community College Classes Let's start with some of the benefitsof taking AP classes in high school. You Can Earn College Credits Without Leaving Your School AP classes are the best way to earn college credits without disrupting your schedule. It's difficult for students who are heavily involved in after-school activities and sports to fit community college classes into their schedules.You can also potentially knock out high school and college requirements simultaneously if you earn a high score on an AP exam in a core subject.Not every college will give you credit for your work in AP classes, but most will at least allow you to place out of introductory courses that could end up being redundant. You’ll Be in a Class With Other High-Achieving Students Who Care About the Subject Another positive aspect of AP classes is that usually most of the students want to be there.Being in a class with other people who are genuinely interested in learning can make a big difference in the experience (not that everyone who takes AP classes is a perfect student, but it’s more likely that they’ll be at least somewhat nerdy). Some students in community college classes could be taking the class as a major requirement.This might mean that they’re not as engaged, makingthe learning environment less intellectually stimulating. The Material Is More Predictable Since the AP program is standardized, you’ll be able to study for each exam and be confident that you've learned all the necessary information.There are tons of review books and practice tests to help you master the material and skills that are tested on AP exams.You’ll also know the format of the test beforehand, so you can get comfortable with it and avoid too much stress on exam day.In a community college class, the tests might be structured in a variety of different ways, and the outlines of what you need to study may be less cleardepending on the professor. They're Usually Cheaper Than Community College Classes Although it costs $92 to take each AP test, that's all you need to pay for the entire class. Even though community college classes are inexpensive compared to four-year college classes, they'll probably cost you more than an AP test, especially if you don't live in the same district as the community college. Some high schools help students pay for community college classes, but others will leave it up to you to take care of the costs.If money is a concern, AP classes may be a better choice for you. I mean, not really, but you get the idea. Advantages of Community College Classes Over AP Classes Now that you know the potential benefits of taking AP classes, lets take a look at what community college classes offer that might make them a more attractive option depending on your situation. You’ll Get to See What It’s Like to Be in a Real College Class Although AP classes are intended to be roughly equivalent to introductory college courses, they can only do so much to replicate the experience a college class.Taking community college classes will give you the opportunity to see first-hand how college courses and exams are structured.You’ll also see what the dynamic is like in the classroom and be able to hear the viewpoints of older students who might help you see the subject from different perspectives.In AP classes, the group of students tends to be more homogeneous, so points of view may be less diverse. You May Be Able to Get College Credit More Easily (and Be BetterPrepared to Place Out of Introductory Classes) Credits from community college classes usually transfer easily to your state school and other public schools. You may also be able to place out of introductory courses in college.This happens with AP credit as well, but since AP classes don’t quite replicate the college experience, sometimes students are unprepared for actual advanced college classes.It’s more likely that you’ll feel comfortable in a higher level class if you’ve taken a real college class already and mastered the introductory material in that context. You’ll Have More Course Options AP classes are relatively limited in their subject matter. The AP program covers all the core subjects, but you might find a community college class that aligns better with your interests than any APs that your school offers. Community college classes are a good way to expand your horizons before college and learn how to choose classes from a wide variety of subjects. A Bad Teacher Can't Sabotage Your Credit AP exams and curriculum are standardized, but methods of teaching for AP classes are not. Some teachers are lesseffective than others.This can be an issue because it affects students’ ability to do well on AP exams, and a low score on the exam diminishes the validity of the AP class on your course record.You may not be able to get any college credit for your efforts in the class if the colleges where you applyonly accept 4s or 5s for credit or if you don't end up passing the test. In community college classes, even if you earn mediocre grades in a poorly taught class, it's likely that you'll still be able to get some college credit. Come on guys. Which type of college class for high schoolers will look better on your college applications, AP or community college? It depends on the types of colleges that interest you.AP exams are scored using a standardized system that almost every school recognizes and understands.In most cases, you can also use AP test scores to earn college credit or place out of introductory classes.High grades and scores in an AP class indicate to colleges that you are a driven student who is capable of working at a high level.A rigorous high school course load is very important to selective colleges, and AP courses may be considered stronger indicators of your academic abilities than community college classes. With community college classes, the difficulty of the class and your mastery of the material are harder for colleges to judge.Since you won’t take standardized tests, colleges must rely on their knowledge of the community college’s reputation and your grades in the class to make judgments.This could be fine if you’re applying to an in-state school or even an out-of-state public school, but more selective private colleges are less likely to accept credits from classes at community colleges that are unfamiliar to them.They may not consider the coursework to be equal to that of an AP course. If you’re applying to highly competitive private colleges, I would advise choosing AP courses over community college courses.Admissions offices at these colleges will recognize APs as markers of academic drive and the ability to handle a difficult course load.They might recognize community college classes as well, but because of the standardization and widespread respect for the AP program, AP classes will be seen as more concrete indicators of your abilities. While it's impressive that you wrote this paper with a comically large pen and still got an A+, we don't accept credits from Reelskool Community College. On the other hand, if you know that you’re going to your state school or another public school, community college classes may be a better option because the credits will transfer more easily. For this reason, they could also be a smart choice in the long run if you want to cut down on total tuition costs (even if they cost more in the short-term whencompared to AP classes). Your decisiondepends on what interests you as well. If your high school doesn’t offer a class that you want to take but your local community college does, you should take the community college class over a random AP. Read up on the courses offered by both your high school and your local community college, and see which classes interest you more.
